Every developer knows the frustration of implementing something perfectly, only to find out it doesn’t work. I faced exactly this issue when setting up Open Graph (OG) tags for my website. No matter what I tried, social media previews refused to load correctly.

Sometimes, in trying to protect the site from excessive bot traffic, we unintentionally block useful bots as well—exactly what happened in my case.
The Failed Fixes: When Everything You Try Doesn’t Work

- Set an absolute OG URL — thinking relative paths might be causing issues. Still no success.
- Modified OG type — switching between website, video.movie, product. No change.
- Cleared cache and tested in Facebook’s Debugger — still broken.
With nothing working, I realized the issue wasn’t with my Open Graph setup—it was something else entirely.
The Hidden Culprit: Bot Filtering Gone Too Far
Digging into server-side logs, I found that my bot filtering script was blocking Open Graph crawlers. I had implemented bot filtering to:
- Stop excessive crawling from spam bots.
- Reduce server load from repeated automated requests.
- Protect my site from unwanted scraping attempts.
However, this inadvertently locked out legitimate Open Graph crawlers like:

Debugging & Fixing the Bot Blocking Mistake
Here’s how I fixed the issue:
1. Reviewing Server Logs
Checking logs revealed that Open Graph crawlers were being blocked alongside harmful bots.
2. Whitelisting Social Media Crawlers
Modified my bot filtering script to allow necessary crawlers:
